Mitosis in living things replaces damaged cells and forms new cells for organism growth, while apoptosis (programmed cell death) results in the destruction of the cell. Interphase happens in preparation for mitosis; it is a time for cell growth. Then the first step of mitosis begins. In prophase, chromosomes become visible and centrioles separate.
