American culture is characterized by diversity in ethnicity and religion. This has led into inner conflicts in search for identity example between the west versus east, modern versus old. Identity is mainly exhibited in early adulthood or adolescence and manifests through positive or negative elements. One can end up in an identity crisis if you fail to establish it at this stage (Nair, Karthika, Justine, James and Santhosh 168). American culture has been showcased though different literary works. McCarthy expresses the diversity of identity in America through his literary works All the Pretty Horses . The paper seeks to examine how McCarthy has his character attempt to make a new lifestyle and purpose, with a focus on John Grady and whether he was successful. John Grady Cole represents the cowboy culture of the West in the book. He is sixteen years old and a protagonist of the cowboy culture who was facing conflicts and ruin as he rides through the landscape plains.
