The security concerns have preoccupied the priorities of states to the individual level. Terrorism activities are one of the events associated with the 21st century. In today’s society, terrorism has regularly been seen in the media and tends to monopolize the media and social-political discussions. Scholars and analyst have attributed the rise in terrorism to religion. The paper seeks to examine how religious fundamentalism has accelerated and intensified terrorism and the emerging trends in terrorism. Religious fundamentalism is characterized with division amongst people (Rausch 246). It aims at the disparities rather than what unifies people. It's often partly motivated by a part of xenophobia and a loss of members to other causes. However, the chain of cohesion is not entirely clear. There may be other motives involved which enable leaders to exploit the fear of globalization for their selfish purposes (Rausch 236). In the contemporary world, terrorism is characterized with new dimensions owing to societal and technological changes. The targets, mechanisms, and nature targets, of terrorism have changed significantly since the end of the cold war in the early 90’s and also with call for globalization. Surname 2 avenue of intra-state violence to a transnational phenomenon, where loosely organized international network of terrorists uses mercenaries organized crime cells, sophisticated weaponry, and modern communication to operate from, through and in various countries. International criminal and terrorist organizations have become intrinsically linked. They have learned to use technologies driving globalization (Knoke 8). Consequently, there has been a globalization of terror as well. No other event in the last decade has dominated the headlines as much as the terrorist attack on twin towers and Pentagon in September 2001. Scholars have argued that international events in the late 1980s and 90 including disintegration of Soviet Union established a good environment for terrorism to blossom (Rausch 259). The easy access to rapid communication technology, easy travel, and democratization of access to weapons of destructions has primarily been responsible for the increasing strength towards trans-national terrorism. Terrorist operate at an international level, no longer concentrating on a region or country. The groups receive or derived vast economy, military and other forms of support from overseas ranging from the sanctuary, finance, weapons and training from other governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals.
