18.3 - Evolutionary Agents The processes that produce genetic variation and foster microevolutionary change are Mutation Gene flow Genetic Drift Natural Selection Nonrandom mating 18.3a - Mutations Mutation is a spontaneous and heritable change in DNA For animals only mutations in the germ line (cells that produce gametes) are heritable, mutations in other cells aren't necessarily heritable Mutations are only classified based on their effect on the organisms fitness rather than the actual change in the seqeunce It isnt known right away whether or not a mutation will be an advantage or disadvantage Deleterious mutations are those that alter an individuals structure, function or behaviour in harmful ways Lethal Mutations cause great harm, if the allele is dominant and the organism is homo or heterozygous both will die. Is the allele is resscessive it will kill only those who are homozygous recessive Neutral Mutations are neither good or bad. Still a change in the DNA sequence but sometimes if the 3rd codon is changed it still codes for the same protein and doesn’t really alter anything other

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
