While advancement theories are appealing to many people in the modern evolutionary age, there are key weaknesses within the view they should not be overlooked. Firstly, a key tenet of advancement theory is that progress is inevitable. However, technological advancement does not equate with progress. Modern technology has brought about much good and evil alike. Furthermore, positive progress has in no way done away with human plight. For example, medical advancements have surely been made over the last few centuries. However, people continue to be plagued by illness and disease. Therefore, we cannot be said to have truly progressed that much in terms of overall health. In a similar way, technological advancements have led to an increase is available information; however human intelligence is still the same. Human dependency on food, water, and the earth’s atmosphere remains the same as in the past. “Advancement is a metaphor that applies to time or to the increase in the quantity of knowledge or to the rise in technological sophistication. Nevertheless, in those essential qualities of humanness, mankind has not advanced. We are still human, with amazingly great abilities and human weaknesses that are equally amazing. Historical advancement is not inevitable or permanent. We can destroy all we have achieved in one great nuclear flash” (Bush, 91). Overall, the theories of the advancement are relativistic and self-defeating and should not be followed.
