Compare and Contrast Paper Mesopotamia VS. Early Egypt Being two of the first civilizations, both the Mesopotamians and Egyptians had similarities as well as differences. Mesopotamia, from the Greek , meaning 'between two rivers’, was an ancient region in the eastern Mediterranean bounded in the northeast by the Zagros Mountains and in the southeast by the Arabian Plateau, corresponding to today’s Iraq. The 'two rivers' of the name referred to the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers and the land was known as 'Al-Jazirah' (the island) by the Arabs referencing what Egyptologist J.H. Breasted would later call the Fertile Crescent , where Mesopotamian civilization began. (Mark, 2009) The name 'Egypt' comes from the Greek Aegyptos which was the Greek pronunciation of the Egyptian name 'Hwt-Ka-Ptah' "Mansion of the Spirit of Ptah", originally the name of the city of Memphis . Memphis was the first capital of Egypt and a famous religious and trade centre; its high status is attested to by the Greeks alluding to the entire country by that name. (Mark, 2009) Both
