Dept. Course Number: PI 242 – FZZ (100% online) Title: Contemporary Ethical Issues Course Description: A philosophical examination of major contemporary ethical issues. Topics may include bioethics, environmental ethics, human sexuality, abortion, mercy killing, and cheating. The emphasis is on acquiring the philosophical skills necessary to guide self and others in the process of ethical decision making. Cases are used for study and discussion. Instructor: Professor Hunter Please note: I put items in red, bold, CAPS for emphasis and to let you know what is important. In a classroom, I can emphasize certain aspects of the syllabus, but in an online class this is the only way to do so. It also makes it easier for you to pick out information later. Notice this is an 8 Week Accelerated course: You have chosen to sign up for an 8 week accelerated course. This means there will be graded assignments due every week. In an accelerated course, the same material is covered as in a regular semester but in half the time. Therefore, this class requires significant dedication, time management, and organization. Work and scheduled vacations do not count as extenuating circumstances for missing a deadline. My power went out, the Internet went down, etc are not reasons to miss assignment deadlines. If you have computer problems you are expected to go to a library, come to campus, or find another means of submitting the work. Therefore, it is imperative that you not wait until the last minute to submit assignments. The week runs Monday to Sunday. All work for the week must be completed by 8:00 pm Sunday. Online Weekly Assignments include 2 logs on the discussion board. This is a department regulation for attendance. You are not required to be online at any particular time. Check mail, log onto Canvas, read assignment, email me with any questions, and make the first discussion post no later than 8:00pm on Wednesday. The second log can be made anytime as long as long as it is made on a different day from the first and by 8:00pm on Sunday. All work for the week must be completed by 8:00pm Sunday Exams must be taken as assigned. No late exams. Required Course Materials: Required Text: Doing Ethics by Vaughn 5 th Edition ISBN: 9780393667257 Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc Computer with Internet capability and WORD processing program. You must post papers in DOC, DOCX, RTF, or PDF format only. This is a 100% web based course using the Canvas learning platform. Students will be required to access power points, posted documents, external websites, and email. Therefore, some computer proficiency is necessary for the successful completion of the course. Phones and tablets often do not work properly with Canvas and should not be the only means of accessing Canvas. USB Drive to save your work. Note: save each assignment to the USB drive as you work. If something should happen to your computer or if you lose power, you will have the assignments and can submit them on 1

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
