- Meiji restoration is the most critical period in Japan’s history - Started in 1868 - Named after emperor Meiji the enlightened emperor - Perry came in and Japan realized how behind they were - Europe was taking over pretty much everything (ex: British winning the opium war) - Instead of fighting the Europeans, the Japanese embraced the west - No other country has achieved what Japan has with the Meiji restoration - Banned the feudal system, which meant no more shoguns - Lots of people fought back, but were obviously unsuccessful - They sent their smartest people to other countries to learn and come back and share what they learned - They reverse-engineered a bunch of stuff and improved upon it - Adopted banking system from the US, capitalism, constitutional monarchies - Only 30-40 years of catch up - By 1900 Japan is not quite a world power, but are strong enough to where they can’t be ignored - Japan becomes strong as its Asian neighbors are at their weakest - Japan has a military now, and use it for imperialism

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
