Dr. Li SCI 114 03-L LAB 8 POST LABORATORY QUESTIONS 1. The evidence suggests that suspect C raped the victim because there were 2 matches from suspect. 2. Suspect B only has one band in his lane because no matching alleles so these lanes do not contain the suspects DNA.. 3. Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) are the repeating DNA segments (~2-7) base pairs in length at each locus. 4. The advantages of STRs for DNA typing are that the DNA samples can be better accomplished with smaller target product sizes. 5. The challenges I think I would be present in collecting in DNA evidence are making sure to identify the correct person since it would be 2 blood samples, it will be hard to not contaminate the blood so the lab can individualize the blood samples. 6. DNA is individual because no 2 people have the same DNA

Unformatted text preview: 7. Mitochondrial DNA is when a sample of DNA is too degraded for STR typing, it can have its mitochondrial DNA typed and it is different from nuclear DNA because the nucleus contains only 1 copy of DNA. 8. I would collect the sample by using a swab and then to get the DNA profile, I would use DNA typing to compare the unknown samples to the suspect(s) samples. 9. PCR is a method of copying DNA and it targets and copies the 13 CODIS loci by enabling billions of copies of those specific variable regions to be obtained (those containing the alleles of interest). 10. Before PCR was incorporated into DNA Typing, DNA was analyzed by discovering portions of DNA that are unique to individuals and developed a technique to visualize these areas, which has been used as DNA Fingerprinting....

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
