Break Assignment Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States Chapter 12 Summary The chapter started off with how president Theodore Roosevelt would welcome a war if it means for expansion. This idea of expanding overseas was very popular, especially among the wealthy upper class people because they believed that foreign markets would be great for their surplus products. As America seeked for foreign markets, it got interested in Cuba. At first, the United States had no interest in wanting military intervention because they believed in the idea of open door: free access to markets without the use of military action. However, as the U.S saw that the rebels would win, the U.S feared that they would keep them out meaning that there would be no free access to trade. Therefore, the U.S helped the rebels with the revolution part of it was because they reminded many Americans their own war for independence and part of it
