SYLLABUSES: A syllabus is a tool that facilitates learning. According to Rodgers (1989:26,) says a syllabus is an outline and summary of topics to be covered in an education or training system or institution. It is also a specification of what takes place in the classroom, which usually contains the aims, contents of teaching and sometimes suggestions of methodology. Yalden (1984:14) as cited in Nunan, says the syllabus, an instrument by which the teacher with the help of the syllabus designer can achieve a degree of ‘fit’ between the needs and the aims of the learner as a social being and as an individual and the activities which will take place in the classroom. Therefore, syllabus is a documented plan within which classroom activities are carried out by the teacher. Types Of Syllabus. 1. A grammar or structural syllabus/formal syllabus. The main principle embedded in the grammatical syllabus is that of viewing language as a system that consists of a set of grammatical rules. The implication for this syllabus is that learning a language would mean learning its rules and then applying those rules to practical language use. In most rigid grammatical syllabuses, one item is introduced at a time and it is required that the learner masters that item before moving to the next. Strengths: A set of forms and structures are selected and arranged from simple to complex for students to learn. A set of vocabulary to be learned together with forms and structures are selected.

The vocabulary is then sequenced. The vocabulary, forms and structures are fit into learning tasks. Learning of the grammatical rules, hence enabling the learner master and apply the rules accurately.
