Cognitive Theories these are theories that explain why the brain is the central part of the organism and the most credible network of information processing in the body as the organism learns things. These theories are divided into two, i.e. Social cognitive theory and cognitive behavioral theories. Where social cognitive theory was started by Psychologist Albert Bandura. He posited that learning is done in the social context , with dynamic and reciprocal interaction of the person, the environment and behavior. Major emphasis is placed on the social influence in the social environment in which learners perform.

Cont’d Whereas Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) is based on how people’s perception or spontaneous thoughts about situations influence their emotional and behavioral reactions. Hence, cognitive theories generally focus on intervening variables, (how knowledge is acquired) pertaining the learner (O), i.e. the role of the brain . To cognitive theorists, learning is facilitated by factors within a person , i.e. mental and physiological states of the mind. So what we learn depends on what we already know and how we perceive the situation based on past experiences.

Cont’d Learning is a continual change in how we think, and learners are initiators of their own learning (function of the brain). Remember, these cognitive theories emphasise mental operation of the learner, based on three elements: Sensation, Perception, and information. This is about what occurs within the learner.
