precedes the sequence of events, like the birth of Abdu Olwit-one of the main character in the novel and events seem to be rotating around him. The Indians who of course own the cotton ginnery, employ mostlythe Northerners to the manual work, with low payments and the Ikangi for the accountant department. The Ikangi was considered to knowledgeable with financial issues and he was also a foreigner. The story shifts, to remind us the earlier life of Abdu Olwit, who is sarcastically being born by Alicinora- a mere prostitute who sleeps with every who comes around, since the cotton ginnery brings laborers from different regions of the country. Alicinora is a woman full immorality that is characterized by drunkennessand sexual immorality. Abdu Olwit is suspected son of Musa Wangolo- Agisu, from Mbale region. Alicinora, being a woman who liked producing local alcohol, leads to her family negligence and irresponsibility, day by day puts Olwit’s life in day-to-day challenges.
