Lecture notes 9/14/06 1) Trade unions a) 1869-knights of labor, 1 st trade union i) secret org modeled after the free masons bc courts ruled that unions were illegal bc they stopped free trade ii) based on class rather than race iii) 1877-6,00 members over 500 chapters iv) intended to stop ethnic rivalry over jobs, that if rivalry was kept up it would keep them impoverished instead of focusing on moving upwards v) 1878-went public under Terrance Powderley, skilled immigrant worker, yes of course he was Irish vi) membership was open to all working classes, ok w/blacks, women vii)wanted a new social order, cooperation bt workers would be the basis for development viii) bankers, liquor dealers, lawyers stock brokers not allowed in ix) demanded 8 hr work day (1) demanded mechanics leads law- gave workers a legal right to receive money for work done (2) 1884-congess declared the 8 hr day the standard but not enforced (3) 1885-they set it as the standard and enforced it to federal employees (4) argued for sat as a 4 hr work day x)
