1) Intro 2) Reasons for going into 1898 a) International business led to American policy was now going to based upon intervention and acquisition, not isolation and neutrality. b) Society’s belief in Social Darwinism led to white man’s burden in which it was the responsibility of civilized west to bring democracy and civilization to the rest of the world. c) U.S. imperialism simply got exported from U.S. to the other parts of the world. We had fulfilled Manifest Destiny took the next step. d) How 1898 contributed to U.S. rise in power i) U.S. aggressive forgien policy (1) Hawaii becomes a U.S. territory in 1895 after the U.S. big business back a revolution. (2) U.S. gained control of Puerto Rico as a territory, Cuba as a protectorate and the Philippines (3) The splendid little war so called by Theodore Roosevelt resulted in only 460 U.S. casualties which boosted American confidence in the battlefield. 3) Reasons for going into 1917 a) U.S. involvement in Mexican affairs led Venustiano Carranza, leader of the Mexican constitutional government to turn to Germany for backing.
