I had this unique opportunity, because I made the decision to join a medical high school. I successfullyjoined Holland Medical High School in Abilene, Texas, because I won multiple awards through the school, I helped with a 5K where all proceeds went to the Children Miracle Network, and the mandatory use of medical language throughout the classes.Holland Medical High School is a high school in conjunction with Abilene Independent School District and a local college, Hardin-Simmons University. Acceptance into the school is through an application process reviewed by a board of current instructors at the school. Lower level medical classes such as Diversified Healthcare Skills (DHS) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) were offered to students as juniors in high school. But, higher introductory medical classes such as, Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), Certified Medical Technician (CMA), Pharmacy Technician, college level Anatomy and Physiology, and finally college level microbiology/pathology were options for classes. After joining the Medical High School, I had to prove not only to others, but also to myself, that I belonged in this discourse community. In order to prove this, I had to stay ahead in all aspects of my schooling, whether that be in or out of the classroom. As a junior, I took an
Mannke 2introductory class called “Diversified Healthcare Skills” which basically gave a broad overview of all possible health care professions. That year on, May 12th2016, I received awards including “Most Likely to Become a Doctor” and “Outstanding 11thGrade student.” As a senior, I took higher level courses which included “Registered Dental Assistant” and “Anatomy and Physiology.” Registered Dental Assistant was a class that the first semester was primarily
