Describe the normal conditions for SST, surface winds, the mixed layer and upwelling/down welling in the tropical Pacific. A normal condition for sea surface temperature (SST) is warming from east to west (22- 30 C). There also must be strong easterly winds and a shallow mixed layer in the eastern pacific where upwelling occurs. b. Describe these conditions during El Nino. Conditions for El Nino include sea surface temperatures that are constant across the basin (30 C). There is also a deep mixed layer in the eastern pacific which shuts off upwelling causing no nutrients. There are also weak and variable winds in the western pacific and weaker easterlies in the eastern pacific. c. Describe La Nina. Sea surface temperatures are cold throughout the whole pacific. There are strong easterly winds everywhere and a shallow mixed layer in the east pacific where upwelling occurs. 2.
