Informal deviance = minor transgressions of normsFormal deviance = violation of norms that have been codified into lawSocial construction of deviance = varies across culture/ social status can influence whether some acts being norms or being deviant. Functionalist – Durkheim = deviance is inevitable and performs useful functions:1.Can bring people together2.Force innovation and changeCollective conscience = common set of norms and beliefs about how the world worksBinds people together, encourages conformityRobert Merton – Strain Theory = argues that anomie and deviance occur when a society does not give allits members equal means to achieve acceptable goals. Symbolic Interactionalist = deviant behavior is learned through a socialization process that occurs from associating with others who engage in crime. Social disorganization = deviance is caused by a broad social factors, particularly disorganization in the social environment.
