Exercise and Nutrition There are many things that nutrition helps our bodies with. Supporting exercise and helping our bodies to recover is one of those things. Exercise and proper nutrition help to make our bodies healthier and help to prevent illness and disease. There are different types of nutrition that are best for pre and post exercise. By understanding how these nutrients work with our bodies to give us the right energy for a workout is important. Both pre and post workout nutrition are necessary to maintaining proper nutrients within our bodies. Appropriate nutritional plans for people can vary from person to person but a physically active person’s nutrition plan can be a good place to adjust it to your body weight and height. It also helps to know your exercise level and you can make nutritional choices based on what sort of fitness program you do. Pre-exercise nutrition is important because it gives our bodies an energy boost of nutrients. Pre-workout meals prevent muscle glycogen depletion as well as muscle protein breakdown during your workout (1). Carbohydrates are important in pre-exercise nutrition. By consuming carbohydrates a few hours before your workout provides your body the greatest supply of glucose to support activity (3). Protein is another nutrient that helps your body during exercise. Proteins make the right amino acids available for your muscles. Eating immediately before a workout is not recommended. Aside from potentially getting sick, it does not allow your body to digest and absorb the nutrients of your meal.
