John Southard Eng 198 September 10, 2007 Response to Radiohead’s The Bends For years I have considered The Bends to be a collection of commercially viable radio singles and little more, but through multiple listens over the past week, I have come to appreciate this album in a different light. Although I knew from the moment that I first heard the opening ambient measures of the epic “Planet Telex” that this album would showcase the artistic effort of a more mature and focused band than the one that produced Pablo Honey , I eventually found myself caught up the singles “High and Dry,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Just.” I now believe that relegating The Bends to the status of corporate moneymaker as misguided on my part at best. I now regard The Bends as exemplifying a perfect transition between Pablo Honey and OK Computer ; harboring remembrances of its predecessor while in the same moment casting a distant gaze to the magnificent opus to follow.
