Patrick Willers English 124 3/3/08 “Before he changed the world, the world changed him” Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara began his travel of male camaraderie in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as he set off to explore S. America. The journey, illustrated in the film The Motorcycle Diaries , would prove to be a very pivotal event in his life and would help to formulate his eventual outlook on the world. Although Che sets off to further understand his own people, the people that he encounters have more of an impact on him than he had expected. He began as a doctor and young adventurer but ended with thoughts of revolution, thoughts that he himself would take years to fully understand, grasp, or take action upon. This dynamic transformation is complimented by the artful and articulate direction of Walter Salles. Salles begins the film as an adventure travel narrative using the letters that Ernesto writes and sends back to his mother and family in Buenos Aires. The audience is primarily focused on very trivial, quirky problems that Ernesto and his travel partner, Alberto Granado, experience. These include the faulty motorcycle, Ernesto’s girlfriend’s virginity and Alberto’s womanizing, all of which are shot with quick pace, and fluid camera work. The fluidity of the free flowing camera captures the lively music, whimsical atmosphere and the freedom in which both Ernesto and Alberto celebrate, while also creating a blissful and euphoric experience, similar to dancing, for the audience.
