CHEMISTRY 2 Green Chemistry Movement Environmental issues attributed to industrial growth started emerging since the 1940s. In the wake of environmental concerns and problems, companies have altered their stand on product development and regular production habits via political agreements and conferences. The advances in ecological engineering and chemical research have facilitated the adoption of sustainable processes (de Marco et al., 2019). The idea of green chemistry emerged from regulatory and business committees as a pollution prevention strategy. It is worth noting that human efforts to improve commercial products, medicines, and crop protection have caused harm to people and the planet. The research paper addresses the growth and impact of the green chemistry movement. Green Chemistry According to de Marco et al. (2019), green and sustainable chemistry is a critical way of thinking about how chemical engineering and chemistry can be done. Various principles have been used in developing, designing, and implementing chemical processes and products. The principles enable engineers and scientists to benefit and protect the economy, planet, and people using innovative and creative strategies to conserve energy, replace dangerous substances and cut waste (Sheldon, 2016). The green chemistry movement seeks to reduce threats to the environment and wellbeing of operators. The concern of minimizing or eliminating toxic waste generation has become more significant than treating the already generated wastes. The origin of the green chemistry movement is attributable to the increase in the human population and growth in industrialization that marked global economic evolution. While comprehensive government policies contributed to the improvement in the quality of life, they did not address the environmental effect of industrialization (Marques & Machado, 2014). The

Different global conferences have addressed environmental concerns resulting from industrialization expansion. Sheldon (2016) contends that by the midst of the 20 th century, industrial advancements had resulted in adverse effects that could no longer be ignored. Pollution chocked a significant number of word’s waterways in addition to acid rain deteriorating forest health. Dunn (2012) argued that the earth's zone developed measurable holes. Some commonly used chemicals were directly attributed to human cancer as well as other environmental and human health outcomes. In 1970, the U.S. created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the responsibility of protecting human and ecological health by establishing and enforcing environmental laws.
