Who is Bangtan? Bangtan Sonyeondan; also known as Bangtan Boys, Bangtan, Bulletproof Boy Scouts, Bulletproof Boys, Beyond the Scene, and/or BTS. Whatever you know them as, they are a South Korean musical group consisting of seven members with a lot of love and talent. The name “Bangtan Sonyeondan” (“Bangtan” or “Bangtan Boys” for short) is the group’s original Korean name; the members have said that this version of their name symbolizes the group’s desire “to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on [sic] adolescents like bullets”. From the English translation, comes “Bulletproof Boy Scouts” (“Bulletproof Boys” for short). “BTS” is the most widely known name for the group as it is simple and is the easiest to understand and pronounce in most languages. In July of 2017, BTS announced that their name would now also be an acronym standing for “Beyond the Scene”. This new acronym was to show that the boys are growing out of their youth and “going beyond realities” as they move forward with their lives and music careers. Who are the fans? BTS, being “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”, needed a bulletproof vest; this, for them, is their fanbase.. Their fanbase, is called ARMY, which stands for “ Adorable Representative MC for Youth ”. ARMY helps and protects BTS as much as possible, just as BTS helps and protects them. Like any other artist, BTS loves their fan base and will make it known that they love them, but BTS takes any opportunity to interact with ARMY and to show their gratitude and support for the fan base. The group is constantly striving to have a close idol-fan relationship. Because of this, many consider BTS and ARMY inseparable.

How did they start? Kim Namjoon, stage name RM, is the leader of the group. RM was born on September 12, 1994 in Ilsan, South Korea. As a child, RM learned to speak English by watching Friends with his mom. In school, RM wrote poetry and became interested in pursuing a literary career but decided against it. At 11 years old, he came to enjoy hip-hop music after listening to “Fly” by Epik High. He looked further into the genre and discovered Eminem; RM then became interested in lyricism. Around this time was when RM acknowledged that his poems could now be lyrics when combined with music. In 2007, RM began rapping in amateur hip-hop circles. Later in 2008, he participated in his first concert. As his skills improved, RM eventually became more active in underground Korean hip-hop and released many tracks and collaborated, under the stage name “Runch Randa”, with other underground rappers. In 2009, he auditioned for Big Deal Records but in the end, did not make it with them. After his audition, one of the judges, Sleepy, exchanged contact information with RM and spoke to the Big Hit Entertainment producer, Pdogg, about him. In 2010, Sleepy encouraged Rm to audition for Big Hit’s CEO, Bang Si- Hyuk; he did and was offered a spot with the record label. Without his telling his parents, RM
