Jason Koehn Eric Burin Hist 103 April 2, 2019 Assignment #2 In Frederick Douglass’s , Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave , he tells us about some of his experiences he went through as a slave. In this narrative, there are similarities and differences between Douglass’s time in Baltimore and Maryland. Some of these included; Authority, personal hygiene, and how they were treated differently. One main difference was there personal hygiene. Baltimore and Maryland differed quite substantially. In Baltimore, the slaves did not worry about their appearance and their owners didn’t care about their appearance either. “ For people in Baltimore were very cleanly, and would laugh at me if I looked dirty”. 1 In Baltimore have a clean slave was a good thing, if your slave wasn’t clean that meant that you couldn’t take care of them and that was something that was looked down on. Douglass got a first hand experience on being treated differently in Maryland. Slaves were put to work for hours on end while being whipped throughout the whole day. He liked it
