Struggles in the Fields Question 1: The strike commenced on September 8, 1965 and lasted for over 5 years. Mexican- American farm workers boycotted and rejected to harvest ripe grapes in a great percentage of California grape yards. These workers were exhausted of exploitation and cruel treatments. The farmworkers wished to be granted with similar chances, similar to those enjoyed by the American workers including minimum wage employment, education for their children, excellent living and housing and conditions to name a few. These workers voiced their claims by using and singing the word “strike” over and over again. The word became the battle cry for the Chicano movement. Question 2: The growers counter reacted to the strike by bringing in replacement workers by bus in addition to attack strikers with legal injunctions. There counterreactions, however, did not slow down the farm workers efforts. Question 3: The whole point of the grape boycott was to place sufficient monetary pressure on
