Final Examination Review Sheet The American Colonization Society “colonization” of freed slaves-their deportation to Africa, the Caribbean or Central America 1816 founded American Colonization Society Rested on the premise that America is fundamentally a white society. They would buy land in Africa and get free blacks to move there. One of these such colonies was made into what now is Liberia. The War of 1812 & Treaty of Ghent Madison asked Congress for a declaration of war Would Americans remain independent people or become colonists and vassals of Great Britain US Against Britain and Indians With neither side wishing to continue the conflict the US and Britain signed the treaty of Ghent ending the war (signed in 1814) Utopian Communities About 100 reform (improved) communities were established in the decades before the Civil War Named after Thomas more who wrote16 th century novel Utopia; an outline of a perfect society Nearly all the communities set out to recognize society on a cooperative basis, hoping to restore social harmony to a world of excessive individualism and to narrow the widening gap between rich and poor Frederick Douglass Slaved childhood Advocate of racial equality Advised Lincoln on the employment of black soldiers and became an early advocate of giving the right to vote to emancipated (free) slaves The Era of Good Feelings James Monroe’s two terms in office were years of one-party government, sometimes called the Era of Good Feelings Strong nationalism and economic growth Nativism A time during the influx of Irish during the 1840s and 1850s led to violent anti- immigrant backlash in NYC and Philadelphia Those who feared the impact of immigration on American political and social life were called nativists They blamed immigrants for: urban crime, political corruption, alcohol abuses, undercutting wages The Monroe Doctrine Fearing that Spain would try to regain its colonies, the secretary of state, John Quincy Adams drafted the Monroe doctrine No new European colonization in the New World The US would abstain from European wars Europeans should not interfere with new Latin American republics Harpers Ferry/John Brown An armed assault by abolitionist John Brown on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia Brown was involved in antislavery He traveled to raise funds for a war against slavery Brown seized Harpers Ferry Placed on trial for treason to the state of Virginia, Browns execution turned him into a martyr to much of the North King Cotton / The Cotton Kingdom Cotton replaced sugar as the world’s major crop produced by slave labor in the 19 th century The strength of American slavery rested on cotton ¾ came from the southern US Cotton supplied textile mills in the north and in Great Britain As early as 1803 cotton represented America’s most important export The Indian Removal Act The expansion of cotton and slavery led
