Nicholas Sell IE 4620 9/27/2019 Summary: Sticking Patients Less The Six Sigma black belt engineers were brought in to find a way to reduce the number of contaminations in blood specimens taken from patients, thus saving blood collectors a lot of money, and preventing the customers from being stuck by needles multiple times. The goal was to reduce the number of contaminations to fall under regulatory contamination percentages. These were at 1%, 3%, and 5%. The Navicent Health organization tried to keep the contamination percentages within these regulations with repeated training for operators, and safe, sanitary practices, however, the contamination percent would always climb back above 5%. They needed a permanent solution to maintain low contamination. The Six Sigma engineering team utilized lean tools such as SIPOC diagrams, VOC analyses, and CTQ analyses to identify the relevant KPOVs. The se KPOVs were identified as follows: contamination defects, turn-around time, and labeling defects, overall contamination rate, and call response metrics.
