UNIT 5 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

Organizational Culture
Culture is the shared traditions, beliefs, customs, history, folklore, and institutions of a
group of people. Culture is shared by people of the same ethnicity, language, nationality, or
religion. It's a system of rules that are the base of what we are and affect how we express
ourselves as part of a group and as individuals (Brownlee & Lee, n.d.).
Organizations also have a culture. Organizational culture is the shared values, principles,
traditions and ways of doing things that influence the way organizational members act. It’s the
way things are done in an organization and it will differ from job to job. Organizational culture is
embedded in the organization’s policies, procedures, and processes and it incorporates certain
values, beliefs, assumptions, and customs into the organization (Brownlee & Lee, n.d.).
Organizational culture is a key factor in the intervention process and needs to be considered for
change initiatives to be successful because there will ultimately need to be a culture change
involved (Furgoch, 2016).
Leadership has a direct effect on organizations and their success because leaders
determine the organization’s values and culture. The way that a manager leads, makes decisions,
delegates responsibility and interacts with employees affects the organization and employee
motivation and productivity. A manager’s leadership style will have a strong effect on the
organizational culture because they set the tone for the way things are done within the
organization. Most employees will mirror the actions of their leaders (Quain, 2019).
Managing diversity, the ways in which people in an organization are different from and
like one another, is extremely important. There are many different types of workplace diversity,
such as age, gender, race and ethnicity, disability or ability, religion, GLBT (gay, lesbian,

bisexual, transgender), socioeconomic background, and even physical attractiveness. Managing
diversity can be challenging but there are benefits to having a diverse workplace.
