Steckler 1 I. Introduction Discourse analysis is constructing an understanding of a social event at a given time by analyzing either written, verbal, or sign language. Discourse analysis utilizes patterns of a certain topic to then create a deeper understanding of the societal construction within a specified time frame. Discourse analysis understands that the way an event is written about or talked about entails meaning. This meaning then allows us to understand the social construction which is contained in a specified period of time. This paper serves to explain how the podcast, Ear Hustle has created emotional responses from audiences which have brought global attention not only to San Quentin but also to the personal struggles of individual inmates. This will be done by analyzing the patterns of public responses on the San Quentin TEDx Talks. There will then be an evaluation of the popularity of different Ted Talks to the popularity of their Ear Hustle episodes. Once the popularity levels of the episodes are identified, I will be looking into the emotional responses from audiences and determining if that is what caused the popularity in their Ear Hustle episodes. Throughout this, I will be gathering information from Michelle Alexander, The New Jim Crow to gain a deeper understanding as to why audiences are more drawn to certain episodes than others, and to identify any societal pwatterns throughout this evaluation. These people were all in support of Ear Hustle and commonly would mention other social issues around the subject of prison reform to raise even more awareness. For the Ted Talks, the audiences were

The demographics of these audiences were mainly Caucasian, and no inmates were in the audiences. This was different then I expected since there was an assumption that the inmates would have a high attendance at these events. However, for the community to come and support the inmates and take a further step towards understanding their lives and struggles shows true intent of the type of impact these types of events have. Even though for Ear Hustle, listeners are attempting to take the correct steps and
