Bueckendorf British Literature 1 February 2019 Article of the Week Response: Sexual Assault The problem of sexual assault has rapidly become a very controversial topic that has obviously existed in our society almost all known history. I advocate for the author’s claim because many secual assault cases that occur today, especially at young ages, stems from the lack of knowledge that males have on the issue. As referenced in the eleventh paragraph on the first page, it mentions how parents limit conversations about sex to “don’t get her pregnant” lessons, which I have observed is exceedingly true. Through observation, I noticed that whenever one of my peers, more specifically male, informed me that they had a discussion with their parents regarding sex, it was always centered around avoiding pregnancy. Every male, with exception of the few with common sense, can not be expected to know the significant impact that sexual assault has on many women’s lives. However, I still believe that the article was centered too much around targeting males. Although it may not happen as commonly, females also sexually assault males which oftentimes is overlooked due to the widespread belief that “men can’t be sexually assaulted”. This is why many cases of sexual assault that are experienced by men tend to be overlooked or not even taken seriously. This creates the false sense that a man does not get sexually assaulted which can be equally as detrimental as sexual assault cases concerning women....
