Honors English IV - Bueckendorf Beowulf Anticipation Guide Activity To prepare for our reading of Beowulf , which we will begin tomorrow, answer the following questions thoughtfully and in complete sentences. The questions will ask you to consider ideas and concepts that make up the key themes of the work, namely the concept of heroism. 1. What is your concept of heroism? What is your concept of a hero? Give a general definition along with examples in your own words. - In my opinion, heroism is based around any person that possess a good heart and values the safety of others as much as themselves. To me, anyone can be considered a hero for doing things as little as helping a classmate struggling with their homework because it’s more of the thought that counts. As long as a person is sacrificing their time to help someone, they should be considered a hero. 2. What qualities do Americans in general value in a hero? Why? List at least three. - In America, typically people who are remembered as heroes tend to be courageous, self-less, and portrays humility. The reason American heroes typically possess these qualities because it shows that they are willing to put other before themselves and that they are not afraid to do so. 3. How do America’s heroic qualities reflect our society? - I believe they do, for the most part, because there a number of self-less people in our society that push themselves to make the country a better place and help people who are in need. However, there are still a vast amount of people who live in America that do not possess these qualities.
