Ms. Marcy White Personal Fitness 10/23/2019 What is basic water rescue? A water rescue is defined as any incident that involves the removal of victim(s) from any body of water. Most people would like to think that if they saw a person drowning, they would immediately dive in, grab the person, swim to safety, and become a hero all in a day’s work, but unfortunately it is not that easy. What happens much too often is the person trying to rescue the drowning victim gets pulled down as well and they both end up drowning! In the following essay I will provide ways for you to avoid this by using basic water rescue methods. One of the most important elements of basic water rescue is identifying and evaluating aquatic emergencies. First, you should recognize the signs and signals of a person having difficulty swimming, keep in mind that a drowning person can’t call for help nor use their arms to signal for help. Common signs of someone drowning are glassy or closed eyes, hair covering forehead or eyes, head tilted back low in water, and an uncommonly quiet or unresponsive attitude. After determining whether the person is drowning or not you should assess the situation to decide what actions to take. For example, if you are at the beach and you see a person
