Discussion #1 Malware Found on PoS Systems at Checkers and Rally’s Restaurants Overview: Checkers Drive-In restaurants are locations where anyone can drive up to the spot and order your food and pay on the spot. The company has around 800 Checkers and Rally’s restaurants across nearly 30 states. Now there was a breach on 102 locations in 20 States on the PoS systems where there was malware found gathering the data stored on the magnetic stripe of payment cards. That data included the cardholder name, payment card number, expiration date and card verification code. From evidence being gathered from the malware, it looks as if the timeframe when the malware was present varies on each PoS system, as well, there was no other data that was stolen besides the credit card information. The malware looks as if it was planted in the systems in 2015 and 2016. The company has since then contacted a third-party

How could proper governance have prevented this event? The way this whole situation could have been prevented could have been rather simple with a policy that would indicate a daily or weekly scan on the PoS systems. Another fix would having an IT specialized in security to go around specific areas doing a maintenance scan looking for the malware on each system. Checking with the PoS system provider and making sure they haven’t experienced any breach on their systems or rather build and implement a new PoS system that would use encryption on all the data that is gathered. This attack really happened due to negligence in checking their systems, the whole situation could have been avoided with the first idea of having a policy to check the system for any activity that would cause the PoS system to run out of normal use....
