Drugs and Consciousness 2 Times when activities in the ordinary consciousness become unbearable, the urge to escape the reality of self leads us to seek other states of consciousness. Self-defeating behaviors; suicide, abuse of drugs serve as an escape route from our problems. Substance abuse and non- drug-induced mechanisms like hypnosis and meditation are common ways of altering states of consciousness. Psychoactive drugs affect how neurotransmitters operate at the synapse of the central nervous system (CNS) by either mimicking or blocking neurotransmitters at the synapse changing mental activity resulting to an altered state of consciousness (Bennett, 2018). Depressants like alcohol increase production of neurotransmitters GABA and reduce acetylcholine leading to reduced brain activity and a relaxed state of body and mind similar to sleep.
