Name: ______________________________ Bacteria Heroes & Villains Use online sources to find information on various bacteria species. Answer question on both sides of this sheet! Bacteria Heroes Very few bacteria cause disease and some bacteria are so essential that if all bacteria were destroyed, every other living thing on the planet would die also. On the other hand, if all living things but bacteria were destroyed, most bacteria would still survive. The bacteria described below are useful and necessary bacteria. We literally could not live without some of them. 1. Methanogens are poisoned by oxygen. They live in marshes and swamps where the slime if full of decay and other microbes have used all the oxygen. The methanogens convert the decaying matter into methane gas. Why is this useful? How could we use methanogens to treat sewage? 2. Pseudomonas live in almost all types of soil and water. These bacteria “eat” pesticides and some synthetic compounds that no other organism can use. How are pseudomonas useful to the environment? 3. Streptomyces produce streptomycin and many other antibiotics which are useful in fighting the dangerous, disease-causing bacteria.
