Key Concepts Population : The entire group about whom you wish to learn. Examples: all residents of a state, all students at a particular school, etc. Sample : A subset of the population from whom data is actually collected in some manner (usually in a survey). Examples: 100 people randomly chosen from all customers, 40 freshman—five from each of the eight freshman homerooms, etc. Census : A survey of all members of a population. Parameter: A numeric value of interest for a population Examples: The true proportion of residents of a city who plan to vote for Mayor Quimby, the true mean GPA of all students in a high school, etc. Statistic: A numeric value, meant to be reflective of the parameter of interest, that is gathered from a sample. Examples: The proportion of incoming freshmen surveyed at a university who plan on majoring in mathematics, the mean number of sick days taken by a random sample of employees at a company, etc.
