Arshad Lassiter Mrs. Bates AP Psychology 11/11/19 Perception Project Image 1: In the first example shown, two faces facing each other have a space that can be seen as a vase in the negative portion of the image, and your perception can alternate between the faces and the vase. If you focus most of your attention on the light part of the image, you will perceive that part as the figure and automatically see the dark part as simply the background. This perception principle is known as light and shadow . The reverse of the image is also true. As a result, perceiving one figure prevents you from perceiving the other. Figure ground is also used in this piece which is the perception of images by the distinction of objects from a background from which they appear to stand out.
