Tyler Starbuck 9/27/19 English 101 Explanation Essay Eastern Equine Encephalitis Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has been an important topic discussed across the news recently. EEE is a rare virus that can only be transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. This virus causes brain infections and kills quickly. The average annual number of people to die in the United States is 7, this year has been a much different story. According to Science News, as of October 1, there have been 31 confirmed cases, and 9 confirmed deaths in the United States. Only about 5% of patients that are bitten by an infected mosquito will develop EEE, but about 33% of patients that have EEE will die. The survivors will experience ongoing neurological problems (Science News, 2019). After being bitten by an infected mosquito, symptoms will begin to occur 4-10 later. Symptoms of the virus depend on which type of illness has been transmitted. EEE can give you two different types of illnesses. These two illnesses are systemic and encephalitic. Systemic is characterized by chills, fever, arthralgia, and myalgia.
