CCHU9012 Body Beauty and Fashion Topic 9: Dress, Culture and Society Learning Targets To identify dress norms To identify norm violations To examine responses to norm violations To understand the meaning of dress Is dress a form of self- expression and individuality, or a form of social control? Theory of social control and dress: a 6-Step Process: 1. Norms (how do you identify them concretely?) - with similarities and variations across and within cultures (and time) - importance relates to factors like social cues, witnesses, context, impression formation, and group membership 2. Norm Violations (why do people follow/violate dress norms?) - authority: rational, traditional, charismatic; and public opinion - we learn from gender socialisation and daily interaction - specific dress codes in work place & public spaces - debates related to school uniforms - debates related to religious clothing
