I was raised and strongly believe that animals were but on Earth so that they can support human life. I believe there is many reasons that animals should not have the same moral consideration as humans. Even though animals are intelligent, they are not as evolved as a human. Humans have used animals for nourishment for many of years; whether that be for their meat, milk, or warmth. Humans with lower cognitive skills should have an ethical consideration above animals. “As Descartes proposed, if we recognize humans as unique and all other animals as inferior, there is no obvious problem in treating other animals as we wish” (Mosser, 2013, Sec. 6.4). We use animals for many years now, to improve the human life, by testing products and medication to insure they are safe for humans. As Gaukroger, 2002, explains “Human beings are able to reflect upon and make judgements about the content of their perceptual representaions – they are able to make judgements as to

Unlike the perceptual cognition of an automaton, which has no intrinsic goals, human perception must be considered in terms of a goal, the goal of understanding the world, and it can be criticied, for example, to the extent to which it fails to achieve that goal. Intrinsic goals enter the picture because of the presence of a conscious intelligence, and that, on Descartes’ account, is their proper place” (p. 217). Descartes philosophy is one that I stand by and is the line that Singer could have drawn between humans and aminals. References Gaukroger, S. (2002). Descartes' System of Natural Philosophy . The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
