Most important blood group system  Discovered un the 1900’s by Karl Landsteiner. - He performed a series of experiments that led to discovery. He received the Nobel prize in 1930. - He categorized the blood groups as A, B, O based on the presence of agglutinating antibodies in the serum or plasma. - The fourth major ABO blood type is AB ABO blood group system

Unformatted text preview: 1. Cell typing (direct or forward typing) - Method is done to determine what antigens are present on the surface of red blood cells by using commercially prepared antisera of known specificity ABO Blood typing methods: considered the second most important blood group after ABO blood group system Name after Rhesus macaque monkey Identified by Karl Landsteiner and Alexander Weiner in 1940 when they injected rabbits with Rhesus macaque monkey red blood cells. RH Blood group system Five important Rh Antigens: D, C, E, c and e. D is the most important and immunogenic antigen Red cells + anti-D (commercially prepared) When D is present = Rh positive ; when D is absent = Rh negative 1. Major crossmatch - the patient serum is mixed with the donor red blood cells to find out if a reaction will happen 2. Minor crossmatch - the patient red blood cells are mixed with the donor serum Compatibility test...
