Physician-Assisted Suicide 2 Should it be legal for a physician to assist in suicide for a patient that is suffering? According to Mosser, 2013 , “Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) is when the physician provides a patient with a lethal dose of medication or another way of causing death, but the patient, not the doctor, ends his or her own life” (sec. 6.3). On June 26, 1997 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution recognizes no right to physician -assisted suicide but the state may prohibit it (D arr, 1997). According to Strate, Zalman, & Hunter, 2005, (Glick, 1992; Glick & Hutchinson, 2001) “Physician-assisted suicide is the most debated of the right-to-die issues that have appeared on the governmental agenda” (p. 23). “There is a very thin line between many of these withdraw-of-treatment cases and a right to assisted suicide” ( Myers, 2017, para 4). Since 1997, there has been a slow but apparent move in favor of assisted suicide. This is true in the United States, and is shown through by several states legalizing assisted suicides. People that oppose physician assisted suicide still have the freedom to articulate their views. They can help strengthen cultural beliefs for the purity of life perception though the democratic process (Myers, 2017). I will examine the philosophical perceptions of Utilitarian and Aristotle theories on the moral issue of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. While Aristotle theory opposes physician assisted suicide, stating that is it never ethically right to lie someone die, patients that are ill beyond medical treatment should have the right of physician assisted suicide because Utilitarian theory states that it is moral okay, it prevents patient suffering, and it is not always intellectually stimulating. “In contemporary consequentialist and mixed system of reasoning, human life is also held not to be an intrinsic good that can never be intentionally acted against. Life is regarded as a positive value as long as it can hold its own against other competing considerations like disvalue of human suffering. Life can even be thought of as a weighty presumptive value since it

Physician-Assisted Suicide 3 underpins all of life’s significant projects. When life manifests ever-increasing evils, however, life itself can cease to be a positive value that must override other competing values and can be intentionally ended” ( Paterson, 2008 ). Physician-assisted suicide is an act of suicide whereby a
