deal about it! Knowing how to prepare and deliver a speech that is interesting will allow you to feel good about the experience! QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE SPEAKER Think of the best speech you’ve ever heard. What did you like about it? Did the speaker seem to know what he or she was talking about? Did the speech motivate or entertain you? Good speakers share many of the same qualities. These qualities serve as guidelines that you can use as you develop your skills as a speaker. t Speak with confidence— One common thread among outstanding speakers is that they speak with confidence. Confidence is knowl- edge that you can effectively undertake the task at hand. Good speakers believe in what they have to say and are confident in how they deliver their speeches. Though even the most experienced speakers are usually at least a little nervous, they do not let that stand in the way of giving good performances as speakers. The other qualities of a good speaker that follow will all contribute to your being able to speak with confidence. t Know your audience— Be knowledgeable about the group you will be speaking to. What are the group’s areas of interest? What are its views on certain issues? What is the group hop- ing to gain from your speech? By knowing your audience, you can tailor your speech to meet its needs. This will give you credibility as a speaker.
