James Zhao ENC1101 Romy Rajan October.23rd, 2019 Self-Assessment Questionnaire 1. How do you perceive yourself as a writer? I perceive myself as a writer that still needs improvement. Sometimes I have inspiration droughts and I have a hard time make sentences the way I want them to be. I have no problem finishing an essay and making it a very normal, but the audience will not be informed by my essay or in- trigued by it. My purpose of writing is to inspire the reader and provide some insights that are unique. However, sometimes I just cannot express myself well enough by organizing sentences in a strange way that the reader cannot understand it well. I just feel like that I need to be im- proved to make my essays not just “A-“ essays, but grade “A” essays that actually make the au- dience think about the topic and give them a great impression. I came from a foreign country and had very little knowledge of English when I first came to the States four years ago. I have grasped so much more, still it is a challenge for me to write English essays because I am so used to talk to people using English instead of writing essays with English, as a habit I write things that are only meant to be spoken and not written on paper. As a writer I am willing to learn more about how to be formal rather than oral and composing better sentences in my future essay prompts.

2. What do you like/dislike about your writing? I like the logic that I use in my writings, and metaphors that I use. My arguments are usually well supported by the evidences that I provide, and I love to use analogies to make my thesis more re- latable to the readers and at the same time more unique. However, I don’t like the colloquial words that I constantly put into my essays. It shows that I am not professional enough to com- pose a serious essay and my lack of authenticity. It is a bad habit of mine and it is very hard to be corrected, but I have to overcome this part by paying more attention to it.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
