May 1 Mackenzie May English 2 Mr. Collman 8 August 2017 Novels Inspired by the Cold War 1,054. That is the number of nuclear tests the United States conducted between 1945 and 1991. When one reads this number backwards it becomes 4501. By removing the zero, that number becomes 451, the same number as the title of the book Fahrenheit 451 . This strange coincidence is fascinating because this same period of time coincides with the Cold War which took place between 1947 and 1991 the very period of time when Fahrenheit 451 was written (1953) and 1984 (1948). Being written during the Cold War, these two novels express the fears associated with that period: nuclear bombs and communism. With these fears in mind, both Raymond Bradbury and George Orwell articulated the themes of communism that government is always watching and that one must not engage in free and independent thinking or suffer annihilation. The introduction of this central theme is introduced by Bradbury and Orwell through the two main male characters Winston Smith ( 1984)
