Verhoff 1 Spencer Verhoff Ms. Stoller English IV 01 October 2019 Determination in God Grew Tired of Us As humans, all of us go through times of pain and times of pleasure. In our lives, there may be situations where we need perseverance to get through a rough period. This definitely describes the Sudanese refugees seeking safety in the 80’s and 90’s. During this time, John Dau and his Dinka tribe went through terrible times of war and suffering. John was still a young child at this point. There were many times where the conditions they were forced to put up with were so terrible that it seemed all hope was lost. However, as we see, this never causes their surrender. John and the group continue to persevere throughout nearly all of their bad and good experiences. In God Grew Tired of Us , Dau shows us that success and well-being will always come from persistently staying determined. During John’s childhood, specifically when he is forced to go on the run to Ethiopia, we see Abraham show a strong sense of determination. During their trek, he decides not to tell John that his family died when their village was attacked. Finally, after two weeks without John knowing, he reveals what happened when the two are caught by the Nuer tribe. As Dau explains, “They looked at Abraham and must have assumed that, because of his age, that he had a wife and daughters... ‘They were killed,’ [Abraham] said... He had kept the deaths of his wife and children to himself for over two weeks, so I would not feel despair” (Pg 59). By these actions, we can see Abraham’s incredible determination. If a single death of a loved one wasn’t devastating enough,

Verhoff 2 we see here that Abraham’s whole family were lost. Keeping to himself about such a terrible event for a whole two weeks shows very strong willpower and perseverance. Also, when confronted about it, Abraham only sheds one tear. This is probably also for the same reason as to why he kept his family’s death a secret: To prevent John from feeling despair. Abraham knows that John is young and needs to be taught correctly in order to survive. If his spirits were low, there would be a lesser chance of survival, and he would be passing that trait on to John and his future. By keeping his family’s death a secret, Abraham teaches John to stay determined so he can survive. To further illustrate this point, we can take a look at John and Abraham’s reactions when they get severely beaten on their journey. As John and Abraham both continue to Ethiopia, they encounter multiple groups of Muslim soldiers. These soldiers then proceed to beat the two,
