3 Keys to Success Discussion Questions 1. Why do you think Richard dropped out of school? Do you know people who have dropped out? What were their reasons? How did dropping out work out for them? I think Richard dropped out of school because he didn’t have an motivation or support to continue in school, not by teachers or by any family. I don’t know anyone personally who has dropped out but i know friends who have friends who’ve dropped out, i believe they dropped out because they just didn’t have any right motivations and didn’t think school was important. I’m not sure how dropping out worked for them. 2. For Richard, what do you think the connection was between dropping out of school and getting involved in crime? Did one cause the other, or was it more complicated? I think it was more complicated than that, I think it started with lack of motivation so he dropped out and then later got involved in crime because he didn’t have anything else. 3. What was life like for Richard in prison? Life for Richard in prison was life changing, he learned to read and write and really started his educational experiences in prison. 4. What did Richard do while he was in prison that helped turn his life around? Richard learned how to read and write as well as appreciate education while he was in prison. 5. How could Richard have gone to school for so many years and still not have learned to read or write? Lack of motivation and lack of support by teachers and other people in his life, they just saw him as a lost cause.
