Introduction This paper will discuss a situation where making an ethical decision in my life has involved applying theories of normative ethics. It will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of applying each theory to the situation, and how the decision was made by defending it using each theory and discussing why this is the best ethical decision in the end. Situation to Consider For the purposes of this paper the situation to consider will be that of something that happened at a former place of employment. In this situation there was a co-worker who would help themselves to many of the office supplies and take them home for personal use. This issue was especially irritating to me because it was part of my job to do the inventory on the office supplies, and was often questioned about why certain items were being ordered so frequently. Of course it was not a certainty that the frequency of the ordering was due to the employee stealing supplies for home use, but it was definitely a possibility. After this had been going on for awhile, the office manager called a meeting of all the office employees to discuss the use of office supplies as excessive, and that there was way too much money being spent on office supplies. Many of us in the office knew of the situation with the other employee taking supplies home, and it was becoming clear that someone would need to say something soon because we were all being questioned about it now and it was affecting our office environment and office morale. Applying Normative Ethics Kant’s theory is a deontological theory that describes moral rules as a duty that one must live up to. Kant said that “ the supreme principle of morality is a standard of rationality that he 2

dubbed the “Categorical Imperative” (CI). Kant characterized the CI as an objective, rationally necessary and unconditional principle that we must always follow despite any natural desires or inclinations we may have to the contrary” (Kant, 2016). So when applied to this scenario. This unethical behavior by the other co-worker should be reported because it is the right thing to do.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
