Agudo 1 Catherine Agudo Professor Campbell ENG – 1000C September 26, 2019 Personal Identity In H.P Lovecraft’s The Outsider and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, both authors convey this concept of social alienation reflecting one’s own personal identity. Kafka, uses the metamorphosis as a way for Gregor to find his identity, but in search for this seems hopeless because he didn’t have one from the start. While, the Outsider in H.P Lovecraft’s short story, is determined to find his identity by encountering humanity. These two authors have a distinctive approach regarding personal identity that leads to a bigger concept that identity is socially constructed rather than an innate trait. In “The Metamorphosis”, Gregor Samsa, loses his capacity of language and slowly begins to seem less human because of his transformation to an insect. He is extremely affected by his inability to communicate with his own family that they quickly forget that he was once human. His own father “emitting hissing sounds like a savage…caused Gregor to lose all orientation” (Kafka 220). Kafka seems to show Gregor’s family also becoming transformed when they come into contact with him leaving a hopelessly large gap between them. Before
