HIS 100 Multimedia Presentation Planning Worksheet Part 1: Brainstorming State three historical lenses that could be applied to your topic and explain how each lens can be applied. Describe how one of the lenses you just identified might change how the Research Plan and Introduction you previously submitted in Project 2 are written. Discuss the conclusions you can draw from thinking about how history is told. Consider how the context of historians’ own time periods might influence or bias how they describe historical events. Describe how your research of a historical topic can help you understand contemporary issues, and try to list at least two related contemporary issues After taking this course, what do you think about the statement “history repeats itself”? Do you think this is accurate? What information from the course guides you to this conclusion? Discuss your obligation as a citizen of your society to understand the history behind issues that impact you every day. The three lenses that could be applied to my topic are those of social, economic, and political. Each lens provides a different way of examining and analyzing a historical event. For instance, in the case of the atomic bomb, the social lens would focus on the people, such as Japanese and American citizens, as well as their struggles and experiences. An economic view would be more descriptive about how the event shaped the finances and economic policies, both While my topic focuses on the impact of the atomic bomb on people, which leans somewhat towards the social lens aspect of history, applying a political lens would change the focus to that of how those decisions made a difference in international and domestic politics. The view would likely be less about the bomb affected people, and more about how the bomb affected government. Considering the time period in which something was written provides some possible insight into the author’s feelings during that time, which were likely even sentiments shared by many during the same era. For example, Bernstein wrote The Uneasy Alliance: Roosevelt, Churchill, and the Atomic Bomb, 1940- 1945 in 1976, a time of political and international unrest and frustration; global relations were tense, and people were anxious, especially Analyzing past events gives us the benefit of hindsight, which, by applying what we know about that past, we can possibly help guide our decisions for the present and future. For example, the atomic bomb and all its devastation has served as a warning against the use of nuclear weapons.
